Lesson 2

You will need an image for this lesson
We are using "NeuschwansteinCastle_Germany.jpg" - an image from Pixabay
Here is a zip file for you - Castle Zip File

Download, then unzip to a folder where you store your images



First - Wait for the Video player to load
Then - You need to watch the video before doing lesson below - it has a lot more important information and explanations for you
You may do the lesson as you watch the video though
Also - Click the full screen button on the player to watch it full screen or you may not see all of the settings properly




1. BROWSE FOR AN IMAGE


Let's use the 2nd one right now - Click on the File Icon


Now browse on your computer files for where you keep your images.
Locate the "NeuschwansteinCastle_Germany.jpg" - you just unzipped and stored
Open the image in your workspace by double Left clicking or click Open.

If you read the top bar of the image that you opened, you will see information about this image

The name of the image = NeuschwansteinCastle_Germany
What type of image = jpeg
How large the image is = it will say a % of the full size
What type of layer it is = Background (If you check the Layer Palette, it will also say Background

Down in the bottom right corner, you will have more information on this image
It will tell you the exact size = 1050 x 700
It will also tell you that it is RGB and 8 bits/channel


2. DUPLICATE AN IMAGE

You can duplicate an image by either of the following
- Window > Duplicate
- Shift + D - This is the one that I use

Now Duplicate this image choosing one of the methods and minimize the original


3. SELECTION TOOL

Go to Selection Tool > Tool bar down Left side - Looks like a dotted box.
S on the keyboard - Shortcut to opening Selection Tool


The tool Options Palette opens across the top.

    Put in the following settings:-
  • Selection Type - Square
  • Mode - Replace
  • Feather - 0
  • Anti-Alias - ticked
  • Selection Style - Normal

Place Mouse in the sky above the Left side of the castle and draw it out to bottom Right.
** Click & Hold left mouse button while drawing out the square. **
Release the mouse.


When drawing square/rectangle - start in the top left corner and pull to bottom right corner
When drawing circle/ellipse - start in the centre and pull outwards

If unhappy with selection - Undo & retry.
After you have drawn out your square, we will copy & Paste.




4. COPY & PASTE

    You can copy by either of the following
  • Edit > Copy
  • Ctrl + C
  • Right Click on top of Image bar > Copy

    You can Paste as a New Image by either of the following
  • Edit > Paste as New Image
  • Ctrl + Shift + V
  • Right click on grey area of workspace > Paste as New Image

***RECAP & CLARIFICATION***
Shift + D = Duplicate whole image
Ctrl + C = Copy the Selection only


Choose a method to Copy and Paste the Selection onto the Workspace as a New Image.
You can minimize the large image for now if it is the road.

    Effects > 3D Effects > Buttonize
  • Height - 15
  • Width - 15
  • Opacity - 100
  • Edge - Solid
  • Colour - Your choice of a darker colour - I chose from the dark clouds

** To get the colour hover over until you see the Eyedropper Tool and left click**

Click OK

Save as - YourName-Lesson2a.jpg
Now remember to save as a JPG


5. SECOND IMAGE

Bring up the image we and minimized earlier and undo the selection if it is still there.
Activate the Selection Tool and change the Selection Type to Rounded Rectangle - leave other settings.

Draw out a rounded rectangle on the image to enclose the whole castle.


Copy & Paste as a New Image.

    Effects > 3D Effects > Buttonize
  • Height - 15
  • Width - 15
  • Opacity - 100
  • Edge - Transparent
  • Colour - Your choice of a blue colour - I chose from the top left corner of sky
Click OK

Layers > Merge > Merge all (Flatten)
Save as - YourName-Lesson2b.jpg Remember to save as a jpg for all future lessons in this level

1st Image - Square
Name this "YourName-Lesson2a.jpg"

2nd Image - Rectangle with rounded corners
Name this "YourName-Lesson2b.jpg"
