Creative Discovery in PaintShop Pro
Lesson 5

You will need this font for this lesson - it is Cherries Black
Here is a zip file for you if you don't already have this font - Lesson 5 Zip File

Download, then unzip to a folder where you store your fonts

You will also need the Roses image. Go to Pixabay to download it
Download the 1920x1203 (default size), then unzip to a folder where you store your images


First - Wait for the Video player to load
Then - You need to watch the video before doing lesson below - it has a lot more important information and explanations for you
You may do the lesson as you watch the video though
Also - Click the full screen button on the player to watch it full screen or you may not see all of the settings properly




1. PREPARE

  • 500 x 500 Pixels
  • Raster Background
  • Colour - None = Transparent Ticked
Click OK

Browse for the Roses Image and open in PaintShop Pro
Duplicate the image - Shift + D and either minimize or close the original.


Go to Image > Resize
Resize by 50% with Lock Aspect Ratio Ticked - Take the Sharpness to 85


Click OK

    Now for the colours you have 2 choices - Use mine
  • #7b876d (Background box)
  • #18280f (Foreground box)
Use your eyedropper tool and pick a light green from the leaf at the top of the image for the Foreground Box
and also a dark green from the darker areas of leaf for the Background box.



Flood Fill the Transparent box with the lighter green in the Foreground box.

2. FEATHERING

Activate the Selection Tool and Choose Freehand Selection (looks like a lasso).



    Use the following Settings :-
  • Selection Type - Freehand
  • Mode - replace
  • Feather - 50
  • Smoothing - 10
  • Anti-alias - Ticked


Draw around the pink roses - very close to them. Take care not to have a flattening of the feathering at the top.


Copy and Paste as a NEW LAYER onto your green image.
Lower the opacity to around 45
Grab the Roses and move them to the top




3. TEXT

Click on the Text Tool. You can also click on the T on your keyboard for a shortcut.

    Use the following settings:-

    ***NOTE***
    Just swap the colours you have in your Foreground and Background boxes in the materials Palette & you will have the correct colours

  • Font - Cherries Black
  • Size - 96
  • Units - Pixels
  • Font Style - None
  • Text Options - None
  • Font Colour - #18280f (or your choice of light green)
  • Alignment - Centre
  • Direction - Left to Right
  • Anti-Alias - Smooth
  • Stroke Width - 2
  • Stroke Colour - #7b876d (or your choice of dark green)
  • Create as - Floating
Click towards the bottom of your image and type your text - I typed the word "Beautiful"
Click the Apply Changes Tick



4. INNER BEVEL & DROP SHADOW

    Go to Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel.
  • Bevel - #8
  • Width - 8
  • Smoothness - 0
  • Depth - 10
  • Ambience - 0
  • Shininess - 0
  • Colour - White
  • Angle - 315
  • Intensity - 50
  • Elevation - 30
Click OK

    Go to Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow.
  • Vertical - 10
  • Horizontal - 10
  • Opacity - 45
  • Blur - 15
  • Shadow on new layer - Unticked
Click OK

Move your text up to sit just under the roses - touching slightly

Deselect (Ctrl + D)



Go back to the Roses Image and Deselect (Ctrl + D)
Select Freehand Selection Tool and change Feather to 25
Now Draw around the Single rose at the top centre of the image - again very close.

Copy and Paste as a NEW LAYER
Move this to the bottom Right corner and sit it just over the bottom of you last letter of your text



Now drag the single rose underneath the text layer
Go to Layers > Merge > Merge All (Flatten)


5. BUTTONIZE

    Effects > 3D > Buttonize
  • Height - 40
  • Width - 40
  • Opacity - 100
  • Edge - Transparent
  • Colour - Background Box Colour - Light Green
Click OK



Save this as YourName-Lesson5
